In response to a potential attack from North Korea, the
United States will be adding 14 more ground-based missile interceptors on its
West Coast.
The phrase “potential attack” comes from a recent nuclear threat made by North Korea to South Korea and the U.S. in regards to increased U.N. sanctions over a nuclear test made by the North.
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel made the announcement Friday of the interceptor increase and said the increase will give the U.S. “the security it needs”.
CBS reports that Hagel also says that he is ready to “ensure
protection of the U.S. homeland and stay ahead of the North Korean missile
threat”.
The Pentagon plans to spend at least $1 billion dollars on the interceptors and will place them with the other 26 in Fort Greely, Alaska.
