A mortar explosion that killed seven Marines Monday evening has prompted the Pentagon to stop the use of 60mm mortar rounds.

Officials said on Tuesday that until an investigation can evaluate the safety of the 60mm rounds, the weapons will not be used.

The explosion happened during a training exercise at the Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada when the mortar round went off in its firing chamber.

Eight men were taken to a medical center in Reno with penetrating trauma, fractures, or vascular injuries.
