Child "Functionally Cured" of HIV

Doctors said that a two-year-old Mississippi girl has been “functionally cured” of the AIDS virus.

In this case, “functionally cured” means that the virus is not appearing with standard tests and lifelong treatment is not necessary.

The findings of this case were presented Sunday at the Atlanta Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.

The girl had received regular treatment since she was a baby and no longer shows detectable levels of the virus.

The girl’s mother had tested positive for HIV when she gave birth to the child, and as a result the child contracted the virus.

Doctor Hannah Gay treated the child and says that she is hopeful that this case will bring about a way to cure other HIV positive babies in the future.
