Teenage Soccer Player Charged in Soccer Ref’s Death

The 17-year-old boy that delivered a deadly punch to soccer referee Ricardo Portillo was charged with homicide by assault on Wednesday.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney says his office is seeking to prosecute the teen as an adult.

If tried as an adult and found guilty, the teen could serve up to five years in prison.

That penalty could be lessened should the player be tried as a juvenile.

He has been held in juvenile detention since punching the ref and is being held on a $100,000 bond.
