Science News: Horticulture on the Martian Landscape

For the 2030 trip to Mars, NASA is researching how food will become available for the humans that travel there.

In order for food to grow, several challenges will need to be overcome.

Space.com says that the planet receives about half the sunlight that our planet does and that supplemental light for any plants grown there is necessary.

Another challenge would be dealing with the low pressure of Mars’s atmosphere.

NASA has supported research in the past that has found that under lower pressure, growing plants lose water quickly.

This would suggest that extra water is needed in order to replenish the plant.

Officials of NASA are still questioning whether the trip to the red planet will be a short mission or one of longer duration.
