A Senate panel approved a bill on Tuesday that would give
citizenship to millions of immigrants who are living illegally in the U.S.
In addition to providing citizenship, the bill would also
create a program for low-skilled foreign labor.
The bill was approved with a vote of 13-5.
Obama said in a statement released by the White House:
I encourage the full Senate to bring this bipartisan
bill to the floor at the earliest possible opportunity and remain hopeful that
the amendment process will lead to further improvements.
Although the panel approved the bill, it now must head to
the Senate floor.
