FDA Shuts Down More than 1,600 Online Pharmacies

The Food and Drug Administration shut down more than 1,600 online pharmacy sites selling counterfeit or substandard medication without necessary safeguards.

The mass shut-down was part of “Operation Pangea VI” and incorporated the cooperation of the FDA, INTERPOL, and other medical and enforcement organizations.

The websites had designs that made the sites look legitimate and appealing, but they were part of an organized crime network that showed false credentials.

John Roth is the FDA Director of the Office of Criminal Investigation and made this statement:

Illegal online pharmacies put American consumers' health at risk by selling potentially dangerous products. This is an ongoing battle in the United States and abroad, and the FDA will continue its criminal law enforcement and regulatory efforts.
