Man Takes Fatal Fall in Chicago Smokestack

A 23-year-old man climbed a smokestack in an attempt to get a better view of Chicago when he slipped  and fell in to his death early Thursday.

Nicholas Wieme was visiting Chicago with his girlfriend when he slipped into the smokestack atop the Hotel InterContinental.

Firefighters responded around 1 AM and were able to pull him out nearly four hours later.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 AM.

Chicago officials report that the area that Wieme entered is restricted to the general public but was not secured at the time of entry.

Wieme was originally from Pipestone, Minnesota and was an aspiring comedian.
