Chile/Argentina Volcano Alert Turns Red

Chile’s National Office for Emergency of the Interior Ministry issued a red alert after a cloud of ash burst from the Copahue volcano Sunday.

More than 2,000 people evacuated the surrounding area after the cloud that reached 5,000 feet into the sky was in sight

In addition to the red alert, warnings of mudslides have been issued due to the danger they pose to those living near the volcano.

The Geology and Mining Service of Chile have reported this statement:

"The intensity of seismic signals suggests the eruption in progress is on the smaller side (but) we are not ruling out the possibility that the activity could turn into a larger-scale eruption."

The Copahue volcano is located southwest of Argentina and near the Chilean border.
